Being Black in America is not a blog that solely focuses on the issues of African Americans. Being Black in America is a blog that focuses on issues dispersing throughout the entire world: issues that are to be discussed from my perspective - the perspective of a young, African American male and American Citizen.
Today in my political science class, the issue of homosexuality and laws restricting the sovereignty of many homosexuals arose. The big questions were, should homosexuals be allowed to express themselves openly in the military and should they be given the same rights and freedoms that heterosexual Americans have been granted?: rights that include the right to marriage, the right to speak freely in the military, and the right to buy a house as a married couple. As a heterosexual male and Christian, I honestly do not understand what the quandary over homosexuality is about. People need to realize that homosexuals are humans too and were born Homo sapiens as heterosexuals were. Forbidding the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitutional amendments and using the Bible as justification for such a decision to limit the freedom and equality of homosexuals is absolutely absurd and not conducive to what the bible entails nor states.
The first amendment guarantees ALL American citizens the right to speak freely. In the military, homosexuals are coerced to suppress their freedom of expression and have to follow a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. As an American, homosexuals should be able to say whatever they want. People shouldn't have to feel obligated to suppress their feelings or homosexuality. If that's who they are, I doubt they can be changed. I don't understand how some militants and soldiers may feel uncomfortable having gay men standing next to them because the way I see it is, "If you aren't gay, don't worry about it." I do not believe that homosexuals choose to be gay, anyhow. Taking into consideration the detriments of being homosexual in today's American society, I would hardly doubt it's by choice. Homosexual individuals in other countries are killed for this and there is no evidence suggesting that homosexuality is by choice. I do not believe that homosexuals are classically conditioned to become sexually aroused when seeing the same sex nor do I believe sexuality can be inherited from one generation and passed on to the next (natural selection). It's a problem that many Americans face everyday and by taking away their freedoms and treating them differently for something that we'll probably never discover the true origin or causes of is bizarre. This only leaves homosexuals to live unhappily and even resort to suicide as they struggle with trying to suppress their freedom of expression, only one of the freedoms promised by the Constitution.

"Leviticus 20:13: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
ReplyDeleteThis is the biblical basis for the mistreatment of homosexuals. Keep in mind that it is the christians and muslims who are persecuting homosexuals, and thats simply because their respective holy books tell them to do so.
Religion is a pernicious, divisive, unproductive entity and can be linked to most of the worlds problems
